ACT Math Statistics: Mean, Median, Mode, and More — Free Practice

8 min read · All stats concepts covered · 4 free quizzes

Statistics questions appear on every ACT Math section — usually 4 to 6 questions. They're often considered easy points, but there are a few reliable traps the ACT uses. This guide covers every statistics concept you need and links to 4 free practice quizzes.

Mean, Median, Mode, and Range

TermDefinitionACT Tip
MeanSum ÷ countThe ACT often hides the count — watch for "a set of numbers" where you must determine how many there are.
MedianMiddle value when orderedAlways sort first. For an even count, average the two middle values.
ModeMost frequent valueThere can be multiple modes, or no mode if all values appear equally often.
RangeMax − MinStraightforward but easy to rush on — double-check you're using the right extreme values.

The Hidden Mean Trap

The ACT loves "hidden mean" problems: "The average of 5 tests is 82. After a 6th test, the average is 84. What did you score on the 6th test?"

💡 Strategy: Use total sums, not averages5 tests × 82 = total of 410. 6 tests × 84 = total of 504. Score on 6th test = 504 − 410 = 94. Never try to work with averages directly in these problems — always convert to totals first.

Standard Deviation (Conceptual Only)

The ACT does not ask you to calculate standard deviation. It tests whether you understand what it means conceptually:

  • A higher standard deviation means the data is more spread out from the mean.
  • A lower standard deviation means the data is clustered closer to the mean.
  • If every value in a data set increases by the same constant, the mean changes but the standard deviation stays the same (the spread doesn't change).
