About the PSAT 8/9
The PSAT 8/9 Math section is split into two modules totaling 70 minutes. It uses the same four content domains as the SAT and PSAT/NMSQT — Heart of Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry — but at a difficulty level calibrated for 8th and 9th graders. A calculator is permitted throughout the math section, and most questions are multiple-choice with a smaller share of student-produced responses.
Because it's usually a student's first encounter with this test format, pacing and unfamiliar question styles trip up more students than the actual math content. Working through leveled quizzes — Fundamental before Intermediate before Advanced — is the most reliable way to build both skill and confidence before test day.

6 Tips to Raise Your PSAT 8/9 Math Score
Strategy for students taking their first College Board math test.
- Start Fundamental, not Advanced. Each topic module is leveled 🟢 Fundamental → 🟡 Intermediate → 🟠 Advanced. Skipping ahead just to "test yourself" builds bad habits — work the ladder.
- Master Heart of Algebra first. Linear equations, functions, and inequalities make up the largest share of the test and reappear constantly in Advanced Math questions.
- Get comfortable with the calculator early. A calculator is allowed for the whole math section — practicing with it now avoids losing time fumbling with it on test day.
- Never leave a blank. There's no penalty for a wrong answer. Always mark your best guess before moving on.
- Time yourself even on topic quizzes. Building pacing habits now makes the full 70-minute practice exams feel far less overwhelming later.
- Review every miss before moving to the next quiz. Understanding why an answer was wrong is worth more than rushing to the next set of questions.
